Turitella Agate

Turritella Agate

Turritella Agate: A brown colored translucent stone of fossilized snails (Elimia tenera shells), found only in the Green River Formation of Wyoming. About 50 million years ago, the shells were deposited in shallow lakes, and later covered with silica-rich bentonite clay sea sediments, which became an excellent medium for silica replacement. This material is excellent for lapidary, jewelry cabochons, and carving. Most of them formed a thin rock bed around 1" to 6" thick, although some areas exceed 12". The best way to cut it is parallel to the way the shell fell during their pile-up stage (known geologically as an "abundance zone").

Metaphysical: Root Chakra — grounding; ancient connection to earth history, especially with the water-earth relationship.
