Peridot in Basalt Matrix: Peridot Crystals in Basalt matrix from Central Arizona. Peridot is the birthstone of August, and is the only popular gemstone to also form in a mafic (high iron-rich) environment. Ultramafics come from deep within the Earth's crust, correlating with the extreme density and ability to hold immense amounts of heat in both the solid and liquid phases. These often form from hotspot locations deep inside the Earth, arching from near the core all the way to the surface, where they remain in a buoyant phase due to their high heat capacity. Peridot, an Olivine gem, is a rare geological phenomenon to form in mafic environments, as there is often not much silica present for gem formation.
